One Opportunity,
Four Skilled-Trade
Routes
We are strengthening the Opulence installation team — and approaching it a little differently from the usual job advertisement.
Suffolk · Norfolk · Cambridgeshire · East Anglia
Opulence installation — freestanding wood-burning stove and full-height flue run, converted barn interior.
We are seeking to make one appointment, with the possibility of a second for an exceptional candidate. What we are not doing is filling four separate vacancies. Instead, we have written four role profiles describing four different trade backgrounds a strong candidate might come from — and we are inviting you to apply through whichever one most closely reflects the work you already do well.
The work we carry out is technically demanding and highly visible. A single project can involve forming a fireplace opening, installing a lintel, building a chamber, fitting a hearth and stone surround, running an internal twin-wall flue through floors, ceilings and a roof, connecting and commissioning an appliance, and then finishing the whole thing to a standard that sits at the centre of someone’s living room for the next twenty years.
Very few tradespeople do all of that. We are not expecting anyone to.
Why are we recruiting across four different profiles?
We could have written one enormous job description listing every skill and hoped somebody ticked every box. In our experience that approach does two unhelpful things: it puts off genuinely capable people who fall short on one line, and it attracts applications from people who overstate the rest.
“Four clear profiles, each honest about what it needs and what it pays. You read the one that sounds like you.”
The person we appoint will complement our existing installation capability rather than being expected to cover every discipline immediately. We already hold qualified electrical and F-Gas capability within the team, led by Reilly, our lead installation engineer, who runs our complex twin-wall and air-conditioning installations. What we are adding is depth alongside that, in whichever direction the strongest candidate brings.
If more than one profile describes you, say so in your application. That combination is exactly what we are looking for.
The skills and experience we are interested in
We work across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and the wider East Anglia region, from our base at Oaklands Park in Bury St Edmunds. The people who do well here tend to have come from carpentry, joinery, general building, brickwork, plastering, roofing, plumbing and heating, gas engineering, refrigeration or stove installation.
What matters most to us is demonstrable practical capability. We would rather see photographs of a fireplace opening you formed, a stone surround you set, or a twin-wall system you routed through a roof, than a list of certificates with nothing behind it. Qualifications matter where they are legally required — and we are strict about that — but on their own they do not tell us whether you can do the work.
Four routes into the Opulence installation team
Gas Safe Fireplace & Heating Engineer
For an appropriately registered Gas Safe engineer with the relevant appliance competencies, who fancies the fireplace rather than the boiler. We supply and install built-in gas fires and gas stoves, and currently rely on outside support for commissioning — so bringing disconnection, installation, commissioning, testing, certification and servicing in-house is real, immediate value. To be explicit: regulated gas work may only be carried out by someone holding the necessary current Gas Safe registration and the correct appliance competencies for the specific work. General plumbing or historic gas experience does not permit it, and nobody will be asked to work outside their qualifications.
Experienced HETAS Stove Installation Engineer
For a registered, experienced installer who can genuinely run installations independently — stoves, flexible liners, chimney and roof work, commissioning and certification. Remuneration under this profile reflects real independence and capability, and we are particularly interested in complex internal and external twin-wall systems, including routes through floors, ceilings and roof structures. That is where capability varies most between installers who look similar on paper, so be straightforward with us about what you can lead without supervision. The rate follows the capability, and we would rather agree that honestly at the start.
Heating & Air-Conditioning Development Engineer
For someone from a plumbing, heating, gas, electrical, refrigeration or air-conditioning background. Air conditioning is a growing part of what we do, and the technical capability is already in place — Reilly is a qualified electrician and F-Gas engineer and leads our installations. This is not an invitation to build a division single-handed. It is an opportunity to work alongside existing technical leadership while helping develop air conditioning into a larger commercial division, contributing across the wider installation programme in between. Existing F-Gas certification is highly desirable but not essential where the underlying trade skills are strong.
Skilled Fireplace Builder, Carpenter & Finisher
For an already-competent builder, carpenter, joiner, bricklayer, plasterer, fireplace specialist or skilled multi-trade operative. This is not a trainee vacancy. We are looking for someone who arrives able to complete knock-outs and structural openings, assess and install lintels, prepare and alter recesses, build chambers, fit and finish hearths, install stone surrounds, mantels and beams, handle the carpentry and framing, cut and fit specified fire-resistant cladding, and deliver plastering and premium making good — independently and productively. What the customer sees is your work, and that is how the job is judged.
What matters to us
Across all four profiles, the same things count:
- Reliability and consistent attendance
- Care when working in customers’ homes
- Safe working
- Accurate measuring, setting out and finishing
- Existing practical trade competence
- Productivity and personal responsibility
- Willingness and capacity to develop
- Professional customer communication
- Confidence working at height where required
Reliability sits at the top of that list deliberately. Our installations are booked in advance and run as a small team; a missing person stops the job for everyone.
Employed and subcontract opportunities
Both routes are available where appropriate, and competitive remuneration is offered under each. Pay is assessed according to the profile that applies, your qualifications, your independent capability and the responsibility you carry — not by job title or length of service alone.
The two routes are not simply interchangeable. Where someone works regularly within our programme, uses our vehicle and equipment and is integrated into the installation team, employment is usually the more appropriate arrangement. Genuine self-employment is offered where the working relationship properly supports a contract for services, following an employment-status assessment.
How to apply
Full role profiles, including detailed remuneration, responsibilities and the evidence we ask for, are available on our careers page. Read the one that fits, and tell us if more than one does.
If one of these profiles reflects the work you already do well — and you take pride in delivering reliable, carefully finished work in customers’ homes — we would like to hear from you.
